The pork katsu at curry-ya is a near-perfect comfort food dish. The only problem is getting a seat in this tiny neighborhood counter-service restaurant. Fried to golden perfection but served without any extra grease, the cutlet comes on a plate beside a mound of white rice that's got just the right amount of stickiness and density to balance out the rich pork. Curry is served in a little hot pot on the side, which is fine for appearances, but the right amount of sauce to put on the plate is "all of it" anyhow.
I'm not a big curry fan but this place rocks. I had the curried chicken and it was delish! The place is very small with only counter seating.
Such a cute spot. Great service and the food is great!
Hands down my favorite Japanese curry in Manhattan. They take such care of the food and attention to detail. While the place is small it is still well worth the wait especially on a cold winter night. Order the baked!
I'm not 100% sure on this place. I feel the star rating is misleading. I went here for lunch and we were greeted poorly by an asian lady working in the front. We had a few questions that she couldn't answer for us due to the language barrier. When I eventually ordered I seen how they made the curry. The curry sauce is stewing away which is fine, but the chicken is premaid and just put in the oven and reheated. The quality of the chicken is also poor. However, when it came it looked good presentation wise. It was served with sticky rice. Overall it was tasty enough but if you're particular about your chicken you may have an issue. The restroom toilet is heated and has many interesting features. Probably the highlight of my visit I'm sad to say.
Really authentic japanese curry. Has the same great taste as curry shops in Japan. Good portions. Bar seating only so it can be a bit tight but very fun.
Friendly staff and authentic taste. Can't wait to come back again
Delicious? Of course. 🤗I would recommend this for the egg curry bowl; it's a special style curry dish that has secured its spot as a go-to choice. They have a lot of options for those who have a diverse diet (e.g. vegetarian curry options for vegetarians and non-pork eaters.) #ButanikuNashi They also offer numerous toppings. They have friendly staff, as well as, Japanese 🇯🇵 imported sake and beer. It's upscale relative to the Go-Go Curry chain, but it's worth checking out.Why wasn't it 5-star, you ask?The flavor profile was good, but not too impressionable. There was a void that the curry dish did not fufill.Overall, check it out if you're in the mood for quality curry. 🥘
I can't say enough about how amazing this restaurant is. The curry sauce is the best in the city and the service is always fantastic. Every bite here is a taste of heaven.
Amazing food with fast service and friendly staff. Would highly recommend the hot chicken Katsu!
Great place for food. Very simplistic but lots of flavor.
If you're looking for the CoCo Curry of Japan in NYC, this is it! The curry tastes exactly the same, it made me so nostalgic. I'm so happy I found this hole in the wall. Whenever I want traditional Japanese curry, this is the one I can always come back to to satisfy that craving
Really tasty Japanese curries. My personal favorite is the baked curry!
House made Lassi - yogurt milk sugar and lemon juice.... good and refreshing, not overly sweet. Seafood curry was good, had a bit of a strong flour taste but not to distracting. Spice levels were mild, med. and hot. Hot was rather mild, but as I watched them make it they can ramp up the heat by adding more hot sauce in the cooking process yo the base stock. They had a baked curry option for $5.5 baking an egg and cheese to the curry. However I was told this was only for mild curry option. Not sure of the limitation, get the hot sauce on the side... ;)
The food is good. The presentation of the food is also good. The place is small. Luckily they have takeout.
Absolutely delicious katsu curry.Get the Berkshire pork option.
It's fairly run of the mill curry. I just don't understand the 3 cold string beans in the corner. The hamburger steak looks like a dry doodoo but tastes aight.
Japanese Curry is a different animal than Indian curry . I worked in a Japanese restaurant many years ago and we would have this for staff meal. It's more sweet than spicy and it's served with pickles. It's great comfort food on a cold New York evening.
Love this East Village classic! You can't go wrong with any of the curry dishes.
Probably the best Katsu you'll have in the East Village. Thoroughly recommend.
Loved the curry. Great place to eat at on a cold day. Curry is rich in flavor and kitchen is super clean.
This is a counter service only spot and the curry here is terrific. Pictured is the chicken katsu curry. The curry has a wonderful peppery flavor that comes through and the chicken is fried perfectly - so crispy. I come here weekly.
Their traditional Japanese curry is very reminiscent of what I had in Japan. I can't wait to come back here!
I was craving some Japanese curry and was looking for a new spot. I drove in from Jersey for lunch with friends. Ordered curry with Tonkatsu, cutlet was tender and rice was perfectly cooked. The curry was on point, thick and tasty, the spiciness was enjoyable and not over whelming. I wish this place had more seating, but by no means is that a slight to Curry-Ya. I like that you guys have a choice in Japanese beer, but you should carry Kirin Ichiban ;-)
Cozy place, curry is tasty and terrific.
Most authentic (and delicious) Japanese Curry in NYC. If you haven't tried Japanese Curry, try the Berkshire pork katsu. It's a fried pork cutlet that is absolutely delicious (all while being a fair price).I'd recommend this place any day of the week
The curry was mild for my taste (I asked for 'spicy' but maybe they gave me normal or mild by mistake?) otherwise I'd give this place 5 stars. The Chicken Katsu was done perfectly, however. Great bar-counter-only-eating atmosphere, friendly staff and great presentation.
super excellent tastybetter than traditional japanese curry in japan, but small place
A decent and inexpensive way to crunch hunger.
I had the last seat when I arrived at about 1 pm. The staff was friendly and the restaurant looked tiny and neat. I felt so good about the restaurant. Then I ordered Berkshire pork katsu curry, which is printed a pic on the menu and the most famous one. The food looked nice, but I was really disappointed when I had it. It was OK, but not worth so high review. I can use the curry sauce which I can buy in a supermarket to make a nicer curry. The skin of pork is good but the inside pork is plain. It needs to be seasoned but it isn't. I have to eat them all because $15 is not a cheap lunch.
Hands-down the best Katsu Curry I've had outside Japan. Perfectly fried cutlet with zero fat. Walking in the door to sit at this bar-only establishment was even reminiscent of Tokyo. Make sure to ask for some extra picked Ginger on the side.
Tasty Japanese curry. Of course in no comparison to what you get in Japan, but for around the area it's worth a try. As for the katsu, the pork is decent but I'd definitely recommend the chicken katsu over it. The sausage was pretty good as well.4 stars because the portion sizing is on the smaller side for the price. Also not recommended for large groups, as the place is tiny and has limited seating.
It's a tiny little place with limited seating. Great service and great food. We tried the traditional Curry and beef dried curry. So good! Beware their spice level. They don't play around.
I tried the dry curry and I loved it! As I stepped into the restaurant from the first place I knew this smell was what I've been wanted. It tastes like what I've had at the Japan. Fried toppings are also very good combination. Staffs were nice and kitchen was extremely clean. Wanna try other flavor next time.
The meal, was simple, but filling. The restaurant was clean and the staff were receptive. Overall enjoyable.
Very good Japanese curry! I love the baked one the best.
I was super excited to try curry from Curry-ya as I heard so many good reviews about it. Turned out that I wasn't a fan of their curry and the overall experience was disappointing. Ironically, everything was OK except the curry, the star of this place. I found the curry to be quite sweet compared to other Japanese curry I have had before. While the price was above average, the pork katsu was average, and the curry was below average. Overall, not worth my time and money. I won't go back to the place.
This is one of the best Japanese restaurants I have been to. The dishes are limited to curry dishes, so it's not a sushi place. They serve brilliant katsu curries and their signature plain curry-ya. This place was a delightful hot dinner on a cold evening. It's a small and snug place and the customers are seated around the kitchen area. Only 10 customers can fit at a given time!
Nice staff and a pretty and clean setting. The katsu curry was great and perfectly sized. The curry is served in a separate iron bowl, bubbling hot, and you get to pour it over your rice however you like. The 'hot' spiciness option isn't that spicy though. Price wasn't cheap at ~$20 though.
Tastes like Japan! Amazing.
Delicious curry served in a small yet comfortable eatery space in the East Village. While the menu is relatively small being a curry specialty, all the dishes are quickly and nicely put together. Definitely be sure to enjoy your curry dish with some refreshing pickled vegetable condiments for contrast. Yum!
Humm I think it got worse... I had it long a time ago, and curry tasted good. But I guess 14 dollars are abit too expensive now.
Real Japanese style curry. Love it very much.
I love my Chicken Katsu Curry and Curry-ya served me one of the best I have ever had! Delicious ! I highly recommend this place !
I have never had Japanese curry before, but really liked it here! It’s quite thick and flavorful!
Delicious Japanese curry. Small portions though.
Loved the curry here, the bar style seating is very reminiscent of the types of places I visited in Japan. It's a small store with coat hooks behind you and a small bathroom in the back, but it was very clean and welcoming. The chefs here are very nice and the food tastes great. Would definitely come here again.
Delicious. Small place. Good spice. Great location.
I am a huge Japanese curry fan. I lived in Okinawa, Japan for over 2 years and got hooked on their curry. Since then i have traveled around the country, attempting to satisfy my craving. I thought Coco's Curry in California was the best until i found Curry-ya. This place fully satisfied my craving. On top of that, the service was top notch and the environment was clean and upscale. My son and I have made this our go to spot when in Hell's kitchen.
This place was delicious! It's a small space, small enough I feel for the employees try to navigate the tiny kitchen space. But I loved it!! I'm in NYC doing a sort of food tour and this place came highly recommended and I see why! We waited about 30 minutes to get in and it was more than worth it! I would have waited 30 more! I tried the baked curry, hamburger steak and seafood. I will say when it comes to the full flavor of the meal I think the hamburger steak was more flavorful but I love seafood. Both were very delicious!! The curry was very mild but full of flavor. Next time I want to try the fried pork!
